US congresswoman says ‘Nakba did not end in 1948’

Palestinian American lawmaker Rashida Tlaib commemorated the Nakba in remarks delivered before the US Congress, saying the displacement of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948 continues to shape events today.

The US congresswoman referred to the expulsion of an estimated 750,000 Palestinians during the war surrounding Israel’s founding.

“We know the Nakba did not end in 1948,” Tlaib said. “We all have witnessed it live. It continues to this day as the Israeli government commits genocide in Gaza, forcibly displacing Palestinians and kicking them out of their homeland.”

"As we mark the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, we honour all those killed since the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people began,” she said, adding that “True peace must be built on justice and the right of return for the Palestinian people.”
