Iranian diplomat says solidarity with Palestinians is not enough

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, said support for the Palestinian cause must go beyond expressions of solidarity and include efforts to address what he described as the root causes of Palestinian suffering under Israeli occupation.

Speaking at a United Nations event marking the 78th anniversary of the Nakba on Friday, Iravani called for “international mobilisation” and a more “action-oriented approach” from the global community.

The Iranian envoy described the Nakba as “a profound regional tragedy” and said Palestinians continued to face denial of “their fundamental rights, including the right to self-determination.”

Referring to the displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 war surrounding the creation of Israel, Iravani said Palestinians had preserved “their identity, dignity, and legitimate aspirations” despite “decades of violence, war crimes, and the ongoing impact of occupation.”
