Lebanon and Israel agree to extend ceasefire for 45 days
Lebanon welcomed a 45-day extension of the ceasefire with Israel following two days of negotiations in Washington, even as Israeli attacks continued across Lebanon, killing at least 11 people on Wednesday.
In a statement shared by the Lebanese presidency, Beirut said the renewed truce could ease pressure on civilians and help support stability, while calling for an independent monitoring mechanism and firm guarantees from the United States.
The Lebanese delegation said, “The extension of the ceasefire and the establishment of a US-facilitated security track provide critical breathing space for our citizens, reinforce state institutions, and advance a political pathway toward lasting stability.”
Israel’s ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, described the negotiations as “frank and constructive”.
“There will be ups and downs, but the potential for success is great. What will be paramount throughout negotiations is the security of our citizens and our soldiers," he wrote on X.
