Lebanon seeks to ‘solidify’ ceasefire ahead of Israel talks
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says Beirut will prioritise reinforcing the ceasefire in upcoming negotiations with Israel, warning that continued attacks could shape the agenda.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Salam said ongoing Israeli strikes would force Lebanon to focus first on securing the truce.
“If Israeli attacks continue, the first item on the agenda will be solidifying the ceasefire,” he said.
Salam outlined key issues Lebanon plans to raise in talks, including ending attacks, releasing detainees and agreeing on a timeline for Israeli withdrawal.
“We will raise the issue of halting the attacks, releasing prisoners, and setting a timetable for withdrawal in the negotiations, allowing for the return of displaced persons and reconstruction.”
He said the negotiations present a chance to end what he described as a continuing state of conflict between the two countries.
Salam added that Lebanon is seeking US-backed guarantees to help restore sovereignty and territorial integrity, while stressing that the government will act as the sole negotiating authority.
He also reiterated the government’s position on arms control, saying it remains “committed to restricting weapons to the state alone”, in a reference to the role of Hezbollah’s military forces.
