Trump says US will withdraw 'a lot' more troops from Germany

US President Donald Trump has said that the US will be withdrawing "a lot" more of its troops from Germany than the 5,000 announced on Saturday.

On Friday, the US military said it would pull around 5,000 troops out of Germany amid a rift between the countries over the US war against Iran. The announcement came days after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Iran was humiliating the US during the negotiations.

When asked about the decision, Trump told reporters: "We're going to cut way down, and we're cutting a lot further than 5,000."

Trump said on Wednesday that he was considering withdrawing troops from European countries, which he said were not doing enough to assist with the war on Iran.

Several anonymous defence officials and a congressional aide told the US outlet Politico that the threat had come as a surprise to the Pentagon.
