Rubio speaks with Lavrov on Iran, US State Department says
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov about Iran, bilateral relations and the war in Ukraine, according to the US State Department.
The call, held at Lavrov’s request, comes less than a week after US President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the conflict, as momentum builds around a ceasefire proposed by Ukraine.
Russia’s foreign ministry said the two officials “exchanged views on the current situation in international affairs and Russian-American relations, and discussed the schedule of bilateral contacts”, describing the conversation as “constructive and businesslike”.
Following last week’s call, Trump said Putin had offered to assist in the war with Iran, particularly regarding enriched uranium, underscoring Moscow’s potential role in broader regional diplomacy.
