Rubio rejects proposal to charge ships for using Strait of Hormuz

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed the idea of imposing fees on vessels using the Strait of Hormuz, saying Washington would oppose any attempt to charge for passage through the strategic waterway.

"The whole world will be against any mechanism that charges money to use an international waterway," Rubio told reporters.

"It's that simple. The president has already said it: That's not going to happen."

Rubio added that he believed Gulf countries would support the US position.

His remarks come after Iran floated the idea of charging ships for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies transit.
