Report says Israel rebrands Gaza displacement plan as 'Freedom of Movement'

Israel has renamed its controversial plan to encourage Palestinians to leave Gaza, dropping the term "voluntary migration" in favour of "Freedom of Movement Plan", Aljazeera reported, citing Israel's Channel 13.

The report said Israeli security officials and the Mossad have been instructed to stop using the “voluntary migration”, which had drawn sharp international criticism.

Channel 13 said Israeli officials believe the new name could make foreign governments more willing to cooperate with the plan.

An Israeli official told the broadcaster that Israel is interested in leading an operation that would see a higher number of Palestinians leaving Gaza and contribute to supporting any future plan that is put in place.

The move comes days after Haaretz reported that Israel's new National Security Council head, Shmuel Ben Ezra, held an urgent meeting on encouraging Palestinians to leave Gaza. According to the newspaper, Mossad officials admitted they had so far failed to find any country willing to accept displaced Palestinians.
