Iran says US comments confirm ‘piracy’ in maritime actions
Iran has accused the United States of openly acknowledging unlawful actions at sea, after remarks by the US president on the capture of Iranian vessels.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Washington had effectively admitted to piracy in its handling of maritime operations.
Posting on X, Baghaei wrote that the US president had described the seizure of Iranian ships as “piracy” and had “brazenly boasted that ‘we act like pirates’”.
He said the comments amounted to a clear admission.
“This was no verbal slip, but rather, a direct and damning admission of the criminal nature of their actions against international maritime navigation.”
Baghaei called on the international community, including UN member states and the António Guterres, to take a firm stance.
He urged them to “firmly reject any normalization of such blatant violations of international law.”
