India repatriates seafarers amid ongoing maritime crisis
Indian seafarers who returned to Mumbai described a “harrowing” experience after being stranded in Khorramshahr during the war involving Iran, according to Asian News International.
“We were stuck in Iran and didn’t even know a war was going on because there was no internet. One day, I saw missiles passing overhead,” said Ravi, one of the returnees, while another sailor said, “missiles were falling frequently,” and sleep was impossible.
The Forward Seamen’s Union of India has urged the government to intensify evacuation efforts, calling the situation “very serious”.
India has repatriated about 2,680 seafarers since the conflict began, though officials say others remain stranded, with incidents including attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz adding to concerns.
