France summons Russian ambassador over drone crash in Romania

France said on Friday it had summoned Russia’s ambassador after a series of Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians and a drone crash into an apartment building in Romania.

The drone hit a residential building in Romania, a Nato and EU member state, early on Friday, wounding two people. Nato and the European Union condemned the incident, which was the first time a drone has crashed into a residential building outside Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.

“This new irresponsible escalation, carried out in blatant violation of international law, once again shows that Russia’s war of aggression poses a threat to the security of Europe and Nato as a whole,” France’s foreign ministry said.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot earlier said Moscow had targeted “a country of the European Union and a Nato country”.

“I want to condemn this irresponsible act by Russia,” Barrot told France Inter.

France also condemned Russian calls for civilians and foreigners to leave Kyiv, saying it had informed the Russian ambassador that “France would remain in Kyiv”.
