UN: Lebanon shelters overcrowded amid mass displacement crisis

UN officials said shelters for displaced people in Lebanon are “severely overcrowded” as Israeli evacuation orders drive large-scale displacement.

Nearly half of the country’s public schools are now being used as reception centres, with needs exceeding available capacity, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

Up to 1.2 million people have been displaced, including about 140,000 sheltering in roughly 680 sites, according to UNHCR.

Dujarric said about 250,000 people have crossed into Syria, including Syrians returning and some 39,000 Lebanese seeking refuge.

Israeli orders have pushed residents from southern areas up to the Zahrani River and parts of Beirut.
